OPPORTUNITY RECOGNITION AND EXPLOITATION IN THE PRE START-UP PHASE: A CASE COMPARISON OF THE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT AND SPORTING EQUIPMENT INDUSTRY (SUMMARY)

Abstract

In this paper we analyze opportunity recognition and exploitation by individual innovators. In the literature it has been criticized that existing studies do not reveal the actual start of entrepreneurial activities (Aldrich, 1999; Katz and Gartner, 1988; Vesper 1980). Thus, it seems important to further develop entrepreneurship theory, especially regarding the innovation aspect of entrepreneurial activities. Using comparative case study analysis, we look at two samples of highly innovative individuals from two different industries to deepen our understanding on opportunity recognition and exploitation (Venkataraman, 1997; Shane and Venkataraman, 2000; Ucbasaran et al., 2001).
